An analytic review of the clinical records of 228 cases of benign biliary tract diseases who were treated surgically at Dept. of General Surgery- of Chungnam University Hospital for 5 years from Jan. 1978 to Dec. 1982, was to get following results.
1) The causative diseases were acute and chronic inflammatory diseases which were most common in 192 cases(84.2.%)) and follows parasites in 18 cases(7.9%), asymptomatic calculous, diseases in 9 cases(3.9% ), congenital anormalies in 6 cases(2.5%) and trauma in 3 cases (1.3%) respectively.
2) The age group of highest incidence was in 5th decade in male and 6th decade in female. The male to female sex ratio was 1. 1: 1 and it had no significant difference.
3) The prominent symptoms were abdominal pain in 216 cases (94.7%). Among the 216 cases, pain on R.U.Q. was most common in 184 cases(80.7%), epigastric pain was 101 cases(44.2%) and radiating pain was 58 cases(25.4%).
4) The positive stone shadow was identified in 12% on plain abdomen films, 24.2% on oral cholecystogram and 13.3% in I.V. cholangiogram. Gallbladder stone was identified 100% on preoperative ultrasonogram.
5) Stone was identified in 166 cases(72.8%), the most frequent site was gallbladder in 100 cases(60.2%) and followed by-common bile duct in 83 cases(50. 0%) and intrahepatic duct in 28 cases(16.9%).
6) In the operative procedures, cholecystectomy and T-tube drainage was performed most, frequently in 94 cases(41.2%), cholecystectomy alone was in 85 cases(37.3%) the next, cholecystectomy and choledochoduodenostomy was in 21 cases(9.2%).
.7) Postoperative complications was noted in 40 cases(17.5%), and wound infection was the most common in 12 cases (5.3%), and bile leakage in 9 cases(3.9%) the next.
8) The overall motality rate was 5 cases(2.1%) who were performed emergency operation, and most frequent cause of death was sepsis in 3 cases (60.0%).
